Stationery Design: Tom & Venla's Finnish Forest Wedding

Last winter, I had the pleasure of working on this lovely bespoke brief for Tom and Venla’s summer wedding in Finland!

They reached out to me for a botanical design inspired by marigolds (the flower, not the washing up gloves!) and a layout that is decorative and minimal, with a vintage aesthetic with the typography.

A Zoom consultation, concept pack and digital sketch later, we were ready to paint!

The assets were illustrated by hand with my trusty gouache paints. I sketched the main flower and the posy for the margin in pencil first, and then applied the paint. After a scan and tidy up on Photoshop, they were ready to layout in InDesign.

I played with several font options before Tom and Venla selected their typography and I finalised the artwork in both an English and Finnish version. They also used the assets to create their table plan and opted for a digital only service so they could print the invitations locally themselves.

My ethos is to create wedding stationery that has longevity and a use after the wedding day, so the front of the invitation works as a keepsake art print for the guests and couple to frame, pin or scrapbook.

The wedding was stunning, and I know from experience as Tom is my cousin and I was there! (it’s always fun to receive my own invitation design in the post!). The vintage botanical theme ran throughout the rustic venue; we were in a magical forest and beach setting just outside of Helsinki, surrounded by trees, log cabins and wildflowers collected and arranged by the Bride, Groom and family.

It was a lovely project for me to work on for my family, and it was also one of the final pieces I completed before I went on maternity leave earlier this year - so it was a doubly meaningful job for me.
